Apple iPhone 4 bar problem: More signal and less noise, please

It seems Apple has a real problem with bars, and not just the kind in which its software engineers leave supersecret iPhone prototypes behind. No, it's the bars that indicate signal strength on the iPhone 4 that appear to have Apple flummoxed.

Office Web Apps used by 20 million, now embeddable via IFRAME, and more

Despite our woeful lack of coverage for Office Web Apps, I'm glad to announce that Microsoft has been keeping its cloud-computing cogs churning: Office Web Apps has, in its first 100 days, been used by over 20 million people, and is now available in seven more countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Russia and Switzerland.

You can also now embed PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets on any website with the power of the IFRAME. This is what they look like:

A bunch of other changes have also been made to the Web apps themselves. You can now open Office files on your desktop directly from SkyDrive, and PowerPoint now has clip-art and more themes!

There's a video after the break (Silverlight powered, of course!) that shows off the new features.

Toshiba and Best Buy team up on the Satellite L635 Kids' PC, one-ups the kiddy netbooks

If you're under the age of ten there probably isn't much that can top seeing the Jonas Brothers in concert, chasing after Justin Bieber or a new episode of iCarly, but Toshiba and Best Buy are hoping its new jointly created Kids PC can elicit similar feelings of excitement from them youngins. The 13.3-inch Satellite L635 Kid's PC, as you may have figured out by now, isn't a netbook -- no siree, it's a big kid system with a dual-core Intel Celeron P4600 processor, 2GB of RAM, a DVD drive, and 250GB of storage. But, of course, there are some aspects that set it apart from mommy and daddy's laptop -- in addition to the "gender neutral" gray and neon green coloring it's got a rubberized, wipeable keyboard that makes it easy to clean off the cookie crumbs and cooties. Toshiba's also gone and loaded the 4.2-pound machine up with loads of child friendly software; it comes with NetNanny parental controls, KidZui's web browser and games like Lego Batman. It isn't a bad package for $499, but it'll only available exclusively at Best Buy starting on September 26. Hit the break for the full release and the gallery below for some hands-on shots of the not-so-little guy. iPhone Awareness! app selectively filters outside noises into your headphones, saves hipster lives

Apps are funny things. They tend to provide narrow utility -- focusing intensely on one specific thing -- but once you get used to them, you wonder how you lived without them. Take this Awareness! app, for example: it gauges environmental noise levels, sets up a threshold, and then pipes in anything louder than that into your skull alongside your music. Reasons why you'd want that to happen include oncoming SUVs, mothers screaming because their babies are in peril (from oncoming SUVs), or something as benign as your teacher yelling at you for not paying attention in class. There's a nice set of options too, such as manually adjusting how loud a sound must be to be allowed entry into your cranium, as well as pausing of the app or of your music. Awareness! is available for five bucks on the iPhone and iPod touch, and will soon jump on to the iPad, Android, Symbian, and even the Mac and PC.Continue reading iPhone Awareness! app selectively filters outside noises into your headphones, saves hipster livesiPhone Awareness! app selectively filters outside noises into your headphones, saves hipster lives originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 04:24:00 EDT. Facebook Is Not Working On A Phone Just Like Google Was Not Working On A Phone

In 2007, Google said it wasn't working on a Google Phone. In 2009, Google said it wasn't working on its own branded phone. In 2008, Microsoft said it wasn't working on a Zune Phone. Leading up to the iPhone unveiling, we heard an Apple phone wasn't coming. Guess what? All those projects were very real. And the Facebook Phone project will prove to be no different.

Perhaps you read our story from late last night that Facebook is working on its own phone. This morning, Facebook PR has begun countering that story, saying that our report "is not accurate." Sorry, did I say "countering"? I meant "spinning".

Microsoft Exploring Prototype Mobile Device, Report Says

This is interesting: Microsoft's developing some sort of new mobile OS, according to Mary-Jo Foley, who's apparently spent months digging for details of a project code-named Menlo.
A just-published Microsoft research paper (PDF) describes Menlo as "a prototype mobile device with a capacitive touch screen (4.1 [inch] diagonal, 800 x 480) running Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2 which incorporates a Bosch BMA150 3-axis accelerometer and Bosch BMP085 digital pressure sensor (barometer)."
Foley's Aug. 8 blog post includes an image, taken from the paper, of a smartphonelike device. Additionally, a number of the project's researchers seem focused on sensors, particularly within the context of geolocation (an application layered atop Menlo, "Greenfield," apparently enables users to retrace their path). Even with that information, though, it's hard to glean the project's ultimate aim: Microsoft already has Windows Phone 7 prepped for the mobile arena, and it's unlikely the company will pursue another homegrown phone project after taking a multimillion-dollar bath on the whole Kin debacle.
As Foley hints, this might have something to do with Microsoft and ARM's recent architecture licensing agreement, which could see Microsoft using ARM's technology offerings to build tablets or smartphones. Or maybe Microsoft's just pursuing yet another research avenue, with no definitive goal in mind. If it's the former, we'll probably find out relatively soon--Microsoft is prepping for a major play (some would say "make or break") in the smartphone and tablet arena over the next several quarters.

Toshiba fulfills your need for speed with UHS-I SDHC and microSDHC cards

Panasonic must be mighty annoyed right about now, because Toshiba's seemingly got it trumped -- when the first batch of lightning-quick UHS-I cards ship in November, Toshiba's chips will be faster and larger on day one. As you can no doubt see immediately above, the latter company's fielding full-size SDHC UHS-I cards at up to 32GB that promise maximum read and write times of 95MB/s and 80MB/s respectively, not to mention tiny microSDHC units that still manage a very respectable 40MB/s and 20MB/s. As usual, these numbers are fast and loose, so don't be surprised if you get a good bit less in practice, but you should be able to rely on well above the quoted minimum transfer rate of 10MB/s. No ludicrous early-adopter memory prices quite yet, but we imagine your ego will write the necessary checks as soon Toshiba takes care of that. PR after the break.Continue reading Toshiba fulfills your need for speed with UHS-I SDHC and microSDHC cardsToshiba fulfills your need for speed with UHS-I SDHC and microSDHC cards originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 05 Sep 2010 14:33:00 EDT.
